HOW CAN
I FIND OUT WHETHER MY PROJECT IS SUITABLE?
Please read the details in this section carefully, including the notes
included in the Grant Application Form. The Foundation is also happy to
provide advice about possible applications – please contact
grants@dajf.org.uk.
DO I
HAVE TO BE A CITIZEN OF THE UK OR JAPAN IN ORDER TO APPLY?
As the Foundation’s purpose is to support links between the UK and Japan,
applicants must be resident in either the UK or Japan and demonstrate a
long-term commitment to UK-Japan relations.
Applicants
for The Royal Society Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation Joint Project Grants
should check the Scheme Notes for the eligibility criteria.
WHICH
LANGUAGE SHOULD I USE WHEN APPLYING?
All applications must be completed in English.
I WISH
TO APPLY FOR A DAIWA FOUNDATION AWARD BUT I DO NOT HAVE A JAPANESE/BRITISH
PROJECT PARTNER. CAN THE FOUNDATION HELP?
The Foundation welcomes enquiries about potential Daiwa Foundation Award
projects but it is the responsibility of the applicant to establish a
relationship with a partner. If your project is at an early stage, you may wish
to consider a Daiwa Foundation Small Grant to begin with.
CAN I submit more than one APPLICATION
in a single calendar year?
All applications received by the Foundation are given full consideration
though priority is generally given to new applicants.
I WISH
TO USE FUNDING FROM THE FOUNDATION TO COVER A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT PROJECT COSTS.
CAN I DO THIS?
Funding from the Foundation may be used to cover different costs but at all
times must be used to support collaboration between the UK and Japan. You must
state in the application form exactly how much you require and for what purpose.
CAN I
APPLY FOR FUNDING FOR A PROJECT THAT WILL LAST LONGER THAN ONE YEAR?
Daiwa Foundation Small Grants, Daiwa Foundation Awards and Daiwa Adrian
Prizes should be used within one calendar year of being granted. However, the
Foundation seeks to be flexible and respond positively to the changing
circumstances of recipients.
WHEN
SHOULD I SUBMIT MY APPLICATION?
For Daiwa Foundation Small Grants and Daiwa Foundation Awards, there are two
application deadlines each year, 31 March (for a decision by 31 May) and
30 September (for a decision by 30 November). However, the
Foundation encourages applicants to submit their applications as early as
possible.
For The Royal Society Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation Joint Project
Grants, there are four deadlines a year (please check dates with The Royal
Society).

WHAT
HAPPENS AFTER THE FOUNDATION RECEIVES MY APPLICATION?
When
your application is received, it is logged and an initial assessment made.
If the Foundation requires additional information, you will be contacted. If
the application is ineligible, you will be informed as quickly as possible.
Eligible applications are then considered in more detail and final decisions
are made by the Trustees in May and November. You will be informed of the
Foundation’s decision by letter as soon as possible afterwards.
Please
see The Royal Society website for further details on the assessment process.
After
the deadline has passed, the Foundation undertakes an initial assessment
before passing a long-list of applications to The Royal Society. A panel of
Fellows of The Royal Society undertake a detailed assessment and make
recommendations to the Foundation. The final decision is made by the
Trustees.
IF
SUCCESSFUL, HOW SOON WOULD I RECEIVE MY GRANT OR AWARD?
If your application is successful, the Foundation will ask how you would
like the funds to be paid. The Foundation can pay by cheque or bank transfer to
UK-based recipients and by bank transfer to Japan-based recipients. As soon as
the Foundation receives acceptance of the Terms and Conditions and notification
of means of payment, the funds can be paid.
WHEN
MUST I SUBMIT A REPORT?
Recipients must submit their Report to the Foundation within two months
after the project has been completed.
IF I
RECEIVE FUNDING FROM THE FOUNDATION, CAN I APPLY AGAIN FOR FURTHER FUNDING?
With Daiwa Foundation Small Grants, it is unlikely that the Foundation will
fund the same individual or institution over two consecutive calendar years.
With Daiwa Foundation Awards, it is unlikely that we will fund the same project
twice. Priority is generally given to new applicants.
IF MY
APPLICATION IS REJECTED CAN I FIND OUT WHY?
Unfortunately, the Foundation is unable to gives reasons for rejecting an
application. The decision of the Trustees is final.
