An important milestone in the history of the prestigious Daiwa Scholarship programme was celebrated at a Reception in Tokyo on 14 May 2007.
The Reception was held in the presence of HIH Princess Takamado and was hosted by the British Ambassador, Sir Graham Fry, The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, and the Daiwa Securities Group.
It brought together 17 generations of Daiwa Scholars, and leading British and Japanese representatives from government, business, education, science and the arts to mark the selection of the first 100 Daiwa Scholars.
The Daiwa Scholarship scheme was the first major programme developed by the Foundation in 1991. Since that time, more than 100 talented British graduates from 36 universities and 21 different subject areas have been awarded 19-month Daiwa Scholarships to study Japanese and to take part in home stays and work placements in Japan. Daiwa Scholars have undertaken work placements at a wide range of organisations in Japan including media companies, law firms, government offices, architecture practices, manufacturing companies, trade organisations, theatre groups, and scientific research institutes.
Daiwa Scholars have experienced diverse aspects of Japanese society and culture from studying noh theatre to working for hi-tech companies; from walking the 500km Nakasendo highway to ama diving off the Shima-hanto Peninsula.
Past participants are now forging careers in the arts, business and finance, science and technology, the media, architecture, law, medicine and academic life. |
