The Foundation is delighted to announce Daiwa Scholars 2009.

In total, they have studied at five different universities: Bath, Birmingham, Cambridge, Imperial College and Oxford.

Their subject areas encompass Archaeology and Biological Anthropology; Biological Science, Mechanical Engineering, Modern Languages and Linguistics, Physics and Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

Daiwa Scholars 2009 departed for Tokyo in September 2009.

The Scholars are:

ANDY BRYANT
Andy Bryant has a MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bath and was employed as an engineer and business developer at Oliver Crispin Robotics Ltd. He had a 10-week placement at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2007 and visited Tokyo again in 2009. He is seeking to become an expert in Asian high technology industries with a view to running his own robotics company.

JESSIE COPE
Jessie Cope completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Birmingham in Biological Science. She initially became interested in Japan through her pursuit of martial arts. She is seeking an academic career in biological research, focusing on animal cognition and behavioural ecology.

DR EDMUND HARBORD
Edmund Harbord was awarded a PhD in Semiconductor Physics by Imperial College in December 2008 and is currently working on academic articles for publication. In 2002 he had a 3-month internship with OSG, a tool manufacturing company, in Nagoya. He is interested in working with Japanese scientists in his field. He is seeking to pursue an academic career as a physicist.

MAXWELL IRVING
Maxwell Irving completed an undergraduate degree at Trinity College, University of Oxford in Modern Languages (Spanish) and Linguistics. His interests in Japan include Japanese sociolinguistics and Japanese approaches to public administration. He is seeking to develop a career in the diplomatic service.

JAMES MCDAID
James McDaid completed an undergraduate degree at Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. He has made 4 visits to Japan since 2005 and hopes to complete a doctorate in the comparative politics of East Asia with a view to pursuing a research-related career in the private or public sectors, or in academia.

CHARLOTTE PAYNE
Charlotte Payne completed an undergraduate degree at King’s College, University of Cambridge in Archaeology and Biological Anthropology. She has an interest in the work of Japanese scientists in the field of primatology with whom she would like to develop links. She is seeking to pursue an academic career, studying human evolution from the perspective of field primatology.
