Daiwa Scholars 2004 studied at six different universities and their interests encompass politics, history, archaeology, mechanical engineering, economics, linguistics and genetics.
They flew out to Tokyo to commence their scholarship in September 2004.
STEVEN GOULDEN
Steve graduated from Oriel College, University of Oxford, with a BA in Politics, Economics and Philosophy. Originally from Hampshire, he developed an interest in Japanese cinema and has studied Japanese to beginner’s level. His career ambitions lie in the Japanese banking system, particularly private equity, fixed income and real estate investment.
DR CHRISTOPHER HARDING
Chris graduated with a 1st in BA Modern History in 1999, obtained an MSt in Historical Research in 2001 and completed his PhD in Modern History in 2004, all at the University of Oxford. He developed an interest in Japan through his study of the Meiji period and has studied Japanese to beginner’s level. He intends to become an academic and writer.
PAULA MALONE
Paula graduated with an ‘A’ in BA Classical Archaeology from Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada in 1998 and obtained a 2:1 in MPhil European Archaeology from the University of Oxford in 2001. Paula then spent one year in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher on the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme. She has worked for Oxford Archaeology, one of the largest archaeological units in the UK, and intends to work in world heritage management and consultancy.
ROSEMARY PILCHER
Rose completed her MEng in Mechanical Engineering with Industry at the University of Leicester. Part of her degree involved spending a year with BAE Systems. Originally from Kent, she has developed her interest in Japan through popular culture but is keen to benefit from Japanese expertise in industrial research. She intends to become a chartered engineer, involved in research and development.
DAVID REA
David graduated with a 1st in BSc Economics at the University of Warwick and is originally from Kent. His interest in Japan has developed through his involvement in martial arts and his final-year project based on the role of the yen. In the long-term, he wishes to study MSc Economics and become an economist in the diplomatic service.
MARK RUSHWORTH
Mark recently graduated from New College, University of Oxford with a BA Modern Languages (French and German). He is originally from Leeds and his interest in Japan developed through working at an English-language college for Japanese students and business executives. He intends to work in the public sector and has already undertaken work experience at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.
NEAL SOMCHAND
Neal graduated with a 2:1 in BSc Human Genetics in 2001 and obtained a Distinction in MSc Oncology in 2003, both from the University of Nottingham. During his time at university, he continued his study of Japanese language that he began at school. Neal hopes to pursue a career in cancer research. |
